3D Printing & Robotics Applications
We developed a Summer program at NSCC where students engaged in using a Robot kit (by 3D Educational Services) to understand & develop solution for NextGen challenges in Robotics.
As you may agree, “Robotics” is not as a new discipline, but could be now an extension of computer science and its sub-disciplines including artificial intelligence, natural language processing, computer vision, software engineering, security, and human–computer interaction, among others. Even though Cyber-security seems to be call of the day that for the most part deals with the infrastructure of the cloud & social media, it also overlaps with the "connected" enterprise, smart factory, automation, building the connected supply chain, secure asset monitoring, asset management using not only security technologies but also AI, data analytics technologies with IIoT Innovations & extensions.
This summer, we explored some of these topics. Even though students want training in software frameworks of companies like Salesforce, Microsoft and others which most perceive as skills currently needed by industry. Keeping this in mind and the larger need for skills in the marketplace, we developed curriculum around training and skills building which we tried at NSCC this summer. We feel that this could supplement the current courses students are doing in the Computer Science Programs either as an elective offering or just part of the computer lab or club activities on the school premises for students to explore.
Sample Robot Challenges:
- Program the Ultrasonic sensor to detect obstacles
- Program the IR (line follow) robot to navigate a 'path'
- Assemble the photocell sensors and program a ‘light seeking’ robot
- Share the projects with other members of the class!
Among others, the primary objective of this program was to train students in programming using physical computing concepts using Raspberry Pi (RasPI) platform. The course included 3D Modeling, 3D Printing and the use of 3D technology to develop extensions to the kit. The course engaged the students through a series of projects with increasing complexity, culminating with a "real-life" Robotics projects.
